About Electrify Southland

We help Southland homes, farms and businesses swap fossil fuels for electricity made here, because it is cheaper, cleaner and more resilient.

Who we are

Electrify Southland is a volunteer community group and the Southland member of Rewiring Aotearoa's Electric Communities network. Rewiring Aotearoa is an independent, non-partisan charity that researches and advocates for electrifying New Zealand homes, farms and vehicles.

Convener

The group is convened by Nathan Surendran, an Invercargill-based building services and energy systems engineer and Principal Consultant at Schema Consulting Ltd. Nathan has worked on energy security and the energy transition in Southland for more than a decade, teaches energy management at university level, and wrote the Powering Forwards farm resilience report.

What we do

  • Turn national research into numbers Southlanders can use, starting with Rewiring Aotearoa's Electrifying Southland report.
  • Publish local research and guides, such as Powering Forwards and our guides and resources.
  • Run workshops and a monthly electrification call, and share honest, independent advice on heat pumps, hot water, solar, batteries and EVs.
  • Make the case to councils, lines companies and community organisations for making electrification easier and cheaper here.

Independence

We don't sell equipment or take commissions from installers. Figures on this site link to their published source. Where we have modelled something ourselves, we say so and show the assumptions.
